SHANGHAI, China: TANZANIA has called for stronger global cooperation to develop responsible artificial intelligence (AI) governance frameworks that promote safety, uphold ethical standards, and ensure wider access to the benefits of emerging technologies.
Minister for Communications and Information Technology Angellah Kairuki made the call while presenting Tanzania’s progress in AI development and governance at the World AI Leaders Summit in Shanghai, China, recently.
Kairuki explained that Tanzania supported international efforts to establish effective AI governance systems that protect human values while creating space for innovation and cooperation among nations.
“AI has become an important tool for accelerating development across key sectors, including agriculture, healthcare, education, digital governance, and the digital economy,” she said.
She further mentioned that Tanzania was advancing the JAMII AI project under the National Development Vision 2050. The Kiswahili language-based artificial intelligence system is expected to serve more than 200 million people.
According to Kairuki, the government was also investing in digital infrastructure to support the safe and innovative adoption of AI, including four submarine cable landing stations, the National AI Data Centre and the Dodoma Digital Technology Institute.

Furthermore, the minister explained that investments are intended to create a stronger foundation for research, innovation, and the responsible application of emerging technologies.
She urged countries to work together to develop AI governance frameworks that protect human dignity, keep pace with rapid technological change, and ensure that the benefits of artificial intelligence are accessible to all communities.
For Kairuki, inclusive and ethical AI development would be critical in enabling developing countries to participate meaningfully in the global digital transformation.
