MTWARA: MTWARA Port has strengthened its position as a key regional trade gateway after handling four cargo vessels and offloading more than 1,500 heavy-duty trucks within a single week, reflecting growing confidence among regional and international traders.
A statement from the Tanzania Ports Authorities (TPA) noted that the trucks are serving Tanzania’s domestic market while transporting goods to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Zambia and Malawi through the Mtwara Corridor, underscoring the port’s expanding role in facilitating cross-border trade.
According to the statement, TPA attributed the increased traffic to ongoing investments aimed at enhancing the port’s efficiency and competitiveness.

“Among the improvements are the modernisation of port infrastructure, deployment of advanced cargo-handling equipment and technology, increased investment in information and communication technology (ICT) systems, reduction of selected port charges and strengthened customer service delivery through improved professionalism and operational standards,” TPA stated.
Elaborating, the authority noted that the upgrades have enabled the port to handle cargo more efficiently while reducing turnaround times, making Mtwara an increasingly attractive gateway for importers and exporters in Tanzania and neighbouring countries.
