KIBAHA: THE Office of the Treasury Registrar (TR) has described the Occupational Safety and Health Authority (OSHA) as a strategic public institution whose role is vital in protecting the country’s human capital and advancing national development.
Speaking on Wednesday during an orientation programme for members of the OSHA Advisory Board at the Mwalimu Nyerere Leadership School in Kibaha, Coast Region, Assistant Director for Human Resources Management in Public Institutions at the TR Office, Mr Hussein Kakurwa said occupational safety and health are essential to Tanzania’s socio-economic development.
He said sustainable development depends on a healthy and productive workforce operating in safe working environments, making OSHA’s mandate critical to the country’s development agenda.
“The Office of the Treasury Registrar regards OSHA as one of the country’s strategic public institutions because of its important role in safeguarding workers’ health and safety while supporting national development,” he said.
Mr Kakurwa added that the Treasury Registrar’s Office continues to build the capacity of leaders of public institutions to strengthen compliance with laws and improve the performance of state institutions.

Meanwhile, OSHA Advisory Board Chairperson Mr Makwaia Makani said the board will work closely with employers to improve workplace conditions and safeguard the health, safety and welfare of workers across the country.
He said the orientation had equipped board members with a better understanding of OSHA’s mandate, enabling them to provide effective oversight of the Authority.
Board member Ms Rehema Ludanga said the training had strengthened members’ capacity to advise both the Minister responsible for Labour, Employment and Industrial Relations and OSHA management on matters aimed at improving the institution’s performance.
OSHA Chief Executive Officer and Board Secretary expressed appreciation to the government for appointing the new Advisory Board following the expiry of the previous Board’s tenure. He said the induction programme covered the relevant legislation, OSHA’s strategic plan and other key operational issues, enabling Board members to effectively discharge their responsibilities.
The CEO also pledged that OSHA would fully implement the targets set out in its 2026–2031 Strategic Plan, which is aligned with the National Development Vision 2050.
The OSHA Advisory Board, inaugurated on May 25, 2026, is mandated to advise the Minister responsible for Labour, Employment and Industrial Relations on the Authority’s performance, institutional priorities, plans and budgets, while monitoring the implementation of its programmes.
