ZANZIBAR: ZANZIBAR President and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has officially launched public transport services using electric buses, alongside the Malindi Bus Terminal, in a move aimed at improving the public transport system and promoting the use of clean energy in Zanzibar.
The launch, held on July 23, 2026, was accompanied by a directive from President Mwinyi to the Zanzibar Social Security Fund (ZSSF) to expedite the completion of modern bus terminals to enable citizens to fully benefit from the new transport service.
President Mwinyi said the electric bus project is part of the government’s efforts to enhance public transport, reduce environmental pollution, and increase the adoption of environmentally friendly energy solutions.

He added that the government will continue implementing major development projects across various sectors, including road construction and improvement, water supply, port development, airports, healthcare facilities, and the construction of the Sports City, which is expected to play a key role in preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
President Mwinyi also urged citizens to cooperate with the government by protecting public infrastructure and supporting development initiatives aimed at improving their livelihoods.
The event also witnessed the launch of special transport cards for students, elderly citizens, and other passenger groups, a move expected to improve access to affordable and efficient public transport services for different segments of the population.
