DAR ES SALAAM: VICE President Dr Emmanuel Nchimbi has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to working closely with human rights defenders, recognising their role in promoting social welfare and advancing national development.
Dr Nchimbi made the remarks on Friday when he officiated the opening of the 15th General Assembly of the Tanzania Human Rights Defenders Coalition (THRDC) at Mlimani City in Dar es Salaam.
He commended the coalition for its contribution to the Mama Samia Legal Aid Campaign, which has reached more than 4.1 million Tanzanians with information and support to help them understand and defend their fundamental rights.
According to the Vice President, the government recognises the important role human rights defenders play in national development, including supporting communities and contributing resources to initiatives aimed at improving people’s lives.

He further called for continued dialogue whenever differences arise between the government and human rights defenders, saying constructive engagement remains essential to finding common ground and advancing the national interest.
Meanwhile, THRDC Board Chairperson Pili Mtambalike said national unity, solidarity and reconciliation were critical to achieving sustainable development and lasting prosperity.
She explained that meaningful development could not be achieved without genuine reconciliation that promotes peace and strengthens unity among Tanzanians.
Mtambalike described reconciliation as an important pathway to healing the nation, creating a peaceful environment and addressing citizens’ concerns through dialogue, cooperation and mutual understanding.
