KIBAHA: CONSTRUCTION of six kilometres of asphalt roads worth 954.58m/- is underway in Ikwiriri Township, Rufiji District, Coast Region, in a move expected to improve drainage, ease transport and keep roads passable throughout the year.
Rufiji District Executive Director, Mr Simon Berege, said the district has a road network spanning 523.51 kilometres, comprising 15.031 kilometres of asphalt roads, 117.254 kilometres of gravel roads and 391.229 kilometres of earth roads.
He said the six-kilometre project is funded by the government through the Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA) and is being implemented by M/S Morcap Investment Company Limited.
“The project is designed to improve stormwater drainage, protect road infrastructure and ensure roads remain accessible throughout the year,” Mr Berege said.
Construction began on May 7, 2026, and is scheduled for completion on November 4, 2026.
The project has reached 30 per cent implementation, with completed works including cement-stabilised sub-base layers and asphalt priming.
Mr Berege said the contractor has so far been paid 143.19m/-, equivalent to 15 per cent of the contract value.
Upon completion, the roads are expected to reduce flooding that has affected homes during heavy rains, lower transport costs and improve access to markets and essential social services.

The project also forms part of wider government efforts to upgrade infrastructure and enhance connectivity across Rufiji District.
Residents have long endured poor road conditions during the rainy season, disrupting business, farming and access to healthcare and education.
The upgraded roads are expected to stimulate trade, improve mobility and support socio-economic development in the district.
