DAR ES SALAAM: THE Former Tanzanian President,  Dr Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, joined other national leaders to mourn the passing on the retired Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Dar es Salaam, the late His Eminence Cardinal Polycarp Pengo.

Earlier on Thursday, the former president signed the book of condolence at St Joseph’s Cathedral in Dar es Salaam, where he also conveyed his sympathies to the Archbishop of Dar es Salaam, Rev. Thaddaeus S. Ruwa’ichi.

Speaking to journalists after offering his condolences, Mr Kikwete said Cardinal Pengo will always be remembered for his immense contribution to the nation and his love and compassion for Tanzanians, describing him as a friend to many.

The former Head of State urged church leaders and believers to remain patient and steadfast during this difficult period of mourning, joining them in prayers for the eternal repose of the late Cardinal.

Additionally, Dr Kikwete said he had known Cardinal Pengo for many years, dating back to the 1970s when he was serving in Nachingwea in his first posting, while the late cleric was Archbishop of Tunduru and Lindi.

Announcing the death on February 19, 2026 at 4:00 am, Archbishop Ruwa’ichi said with deep sorrow that Cardinal Pengo had passed away at the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI) in Dar es Salaam.

According to the official burial programme, funeral rites will be held at St Joseph’s Cathedral and the Pugu Pilgrimage Centre. The body will arrive at St Joseph’s Cathedral at 3:00 am on Saturday, February 28, 2026, under the coordination of the funeral committee, marking the start of official farewell ceremonies.
