DODOMA: DODOMA-based Benjamin Mkapa Hospital (BMH), a Central Zone tertiary referral facility, has successfully performed a delicate laparoscopic surgery on a patient from Mvumi Village in Manyoni District, Singida Region.
Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical technique used to examine or treat abdominal or pelvic organs using a camera inserted through a small incision of about one centimetre.
According to BMH gastroenterologist, Dr Ahmed Binde, the patient, Mr John Godfrey, was diagnosed with an enlarged large intestine following a colonoscopy procedure.
“The patient experienced complications due to the enlarged large intestine and required surgery to correct the condition,” said Dr Binde.
He explained that the patient was given options between open surgery and laparoscopic surgery and opted for the minimally invasive procedure.
“The operation took three hours, and by the next day, the patient had recovered well and was in stable condition,” he said.
Mr Godfrey said he had been experiencing abdominal pain for over a year before seeking medical attention at BMH.
“After diagnosis, I was informed that I had complications in my large intestine and needed surgery,” he said.
The successful procedure highlights the growing capacity of local health facilities to deliver specialised and advanced medical services.
