
DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA’S efforts to expand women’s participation in leadership, economic activities and social development took centre stage on Tuesday as the government held talks with UN Women on strengthening gender equality initiatives.
The discussion transpired during talks between the Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, and the UN Women Regional Director for East and Southern Africa, Anna Mutavati, and the organisation’s new Tanzania Representative, Julia Broussard.
The meeting, held at the Ministry’s offices in Dar es Salaam, focused on areas of cooperation in promoting women’s empowerment.
Speaking at the meeting, Ambassador Kombo said the government values its partnership with UN Women while stressing the importance of advancing women’s leadership, education, health and employment opportunities.

According to the minister, Tanzania’s anticipated roles in the African Union and United Nations Security Council will provide platforms to promote gender equality and women’s leadership at regional and global levels.
For her part, Ms Mutavati praised Tanzania’s progress in promoting gender equality, citing improvements in childcare services, clean energy initiatives and women’s economic empowerment.
She said the progress made has positioned Tanzania as a key example in advancing initiatives that create greater opportunities for women and girls to contribute to national development.
