CHINA: Tanzania’s Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Angellah Kairuki, has arrived in China to participate in the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC), a global forum aimed at promoting knowledge exchange, strengthening international cooperation, and exploring innovative solutions to accelerate the digital economy and digital transformation.

The conference, taking place from July 17 to 20, 2026, was officially opened by Chinese President Xi Jinping and attended by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, alongside government leaders, policymakers, technology experts, innovators, private sector representatives, international organizations, and other stakeholders from the information and communications technology (ICT) sector around the world.

Addressing the conference, Guterres proposed the establishment of a Global AI Fund to support developing countries in accessing critical resources for establishing and operating Artificial Intelligence Data Centres. The proposed fund would also provide training, technical assistance, and other capacity-building support to help bridge the global AI development gap.

Tanzania’s participation in the conference underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening international cooperation in artificial intelligence development, adopting global best practices, and promoting the use of emerging technologies to accelerate the country’s digital transformation and support sustainable development.
