
DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA has underscored its long-standing historical and diplomatic relationship with the Union of the Comoros during commemorations marking 51 years since the island nation gained independence.
The remarks were made by the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Dr Ngwaru Maghembe, when attending a special lecture held at the Dr Salim Ahmed Salim Centre for International Relations in Dar es Salaam.
Speaking at the celebrations, Dr Maghembe pledged Tanzania’s continued commitment to close cooperation with Comoros, noting that the relationship between the two countries is rooted in shared history and solidarity dating back to the liberation struggle.
He paid tribute to Tanzania’s founding President, the late Julius Kambarage Nyerere, for his support to Comoros during its push for independence.

Moreover, he commended Comoros Ambassador Dr Ahamada El Badaoui Mohamed Fakih for organizing the event, describing it as an important platform for reflection on the progress of bilateral relations and regional cooperation.
Ambassador Fakih expressed appreciation to Tanzania for its role in supporting Comoros’ independence movement, which led to the country’s liberation in 1975. He noted that Tanzania has remained a key partner in advancing peace, development and cooperation in the region.
The two countries continue to collaborate in key sectors including health, security, trade and investment, transport, port development and education, with both sides indicating ongoing efforts to expand areas of mutual benefit for their citizens.
